Everton beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park on Monday 2 November, four days after beating them 3-1 in the Carabao Cup, the English league cup. Thierno Barry scored the only goal after 49 minutes. Newcastle hit the post, had a shot cleared off the line, and finished the game with ten men after Jacob Ramsey was sent off in the eighth minute of stoppage time. The game closed the Premier League's tenth round, so every club in the division has now played nine times.

## How it happened

The first half had no goals and few clear chances. Everton's club report says Merlin Röhl sent an early first-time shot narrowly over the bar, and that Barry could not make clean contact from seven yards after Jarrad Branthwaite had headed down a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall free-kick. In first-half stoppage time Harrison Armstrong, who started in central midfield, shot wide from 12 yards after a cut-back. For Newcastle, the club's own report says Harvey Barnes crossed dangerously in the opening spell and that Jordan Pickford saved from a William Osula cross that deflected off James Tarkowski.

The goal came four minutes after the restart. James Garner slid Tyrique George in down the left, George's low shot squeezed through the hands of Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, and Barry tapped the loose ball in from a yard out. Everton's report counts it as Barry's eighth goal of the season.

Newcastle had their chances to level. Horníček kept them in the game first, turning a Branthwaite header over the bar, saving a Dewsbury-Hall shot from 25 yards and then a Jake O'Brien header from the corner that followed. Head coach Matthias Jaissle sent on Yoane Wissa and Sean Steur after 64 minutes and Ramsey and Jacob Murphy after 76. According to Everton's report, Anthony Elanga got a finish under Pickford only for Tarkowski to clear it off the line, and Ramsey struck the left-hand post with a volley from the edge of the area with about 11 minutes left. In stoppage time Pickford saved a close-range Wissa shot with his legs. Then Ramsey, a substitute, was booked twice in quick succession for late tackles, on Hayden Hackney and Armstrong as Everton's report describes them, and was sent off with seconds left.

Branthwaite returned for Everton after missing two games under the concussion protocol, the rules that keep a player out for a set period after a head injury.

## What it changes

Everton move up to seventh on 13 points from nine games: three wins, four draws and two defeats. They are one point behind Brentford in sixth and three behind Liverpool in fifth.

Newcastle stay on 11 points and drop to 13th, below Hull City and Leeds on goal difference. They have lost four of nine league games and have scored three fewer goals than they have conceded. The chance to climb into the top half with a win has gone, and a red card for two bookings normally brings a one-match ban, so Ramsey is likely to miss the next league game.

Both clubs have one more game before the international break. Everton host Coventry on Friday 6 November at 21:00 CET. Newcastle go to Fulham on Saturday 7 November at 16:00 CET.

## What the market said

A betting price is a crowd's opinion written as a number, and dividing 1 by the price gives a rough chance. The last price BettingBeast's feed captured before kick-off, at 20:44 CET, made Newcastle the favourite at 2.25, about a 44% chance. Everton and the draw were both 3.56, about 28% each. Everton, the longer price, won. That was the home side's shortest price of the four days the feed had followed the game: when the market opened on Friday 30 October at 13:54 CET Newcastle were 2.38 and Everton 3.17. The goals line was 2.5, with over at 1.84 and under at 2.12, and the game had one goal.
