Juventus v Napoli: Spalletti and Allegri have swapped benches, and both clubs are stuck on 14 points

Juventus host Napoli at the Allianz Stadium in Turin at 20:45 CET on Sunday 1 November. It is the last game of Serie A’s tenth round, and it brings together two coaches who know the other side’s dressing room very well.

Why it matters

Luciano Spalletti won the league title with Napoli in 2023 and now coaches Juventus. Massimiliano Allegri won five titles in a row at Juventus between 2015 and 2019 and now coaches Napoli. Each man is managing the other’s old club, and neither has had a good autumn.

Both clubs have 14 points from nine games: four wins, two draws and three defeats each. Napoli are seventh on goal difference, which is goals scored minus goals conceded, with plus 6. Juventus are eighth with plus 1. Inter and Lazio lead the league on 25 points, so both of Sunday’s teams are already 11 points off the top. The fourth place that brings a Champions League spot is held by Como on 20 points, six clear of the pair.

Wednesday night told two different stories. Juventus lost 2-0 at Genoa, and Spalletti did not hide from it. “First of all, we’d like to apologise to the fans for our performance,” he said in the club’s own press-room report. He added: “Tonight we were outplayed in every area, and we need to recognise that.”

Napoli, the same evening, won 4-1 at Monza. Rasmus Højlund scored after 10 minutes, Monza’s Varela headed an equaliser before half-time, and then Matteo Politano, Rafa Marín and Kevin De Bruyne scored in the second half, according to the club’s match report. The win came after a 3-3 home draw with Roma and a 1-0 defeat at Venezia, so it was Napoli’s first league win in three.

Team news

No confirmed team news as of 18:00 CET on Friday. Serie A publishes the official teams about an hour before kick-off, so expect them around 19:45 CET on Sunday.

What is known comes from the clubs. Napoli’s match report from Monza says Stanislav Lobotka went off after 17 minutes and that assistant coach Marco Landucci, who was in charge on the night in Allegri’s place, said Napoli would be without the midfielder “for a while.” Lobotka is the player who sets Napoli’s passing rhythm from the base of midfield, so his absence changes how they play. Billy Gilmour replaced him at Monza. De Bruyne came off the bench to score, so he is fit.

Juventus gave no injury news in the Genoa press-room report, and the club had not published a pre-match press conference for this game when we checked. Spalletti said after Genoa that the team needed “to raise our game physically and in terms of fighting spirit,” which reads as a hint that changes are coming, but that is our reading, not a club statement.

How to read the market

BettingBeast’s prices, captured at 13:54 CET on Friday, had Juventus at 2.37 to win, the draw at 3.38 and Napoli at 3.42. Decimal odds show how much you get back for every unit staked, including the stake, so 2.37 means a return of 1.37 on top of each 1 risked. As rough probabilities, that is about 42% for a Juventus win, 30% for a draw and 29% for Napoli. The three add up to slightly more than a whole because the platform’s margin is built in.

So the market has Juventus as home favourites, but not by much. Two teams with the same points, one coming off a heavy defeat and one off a 4-1 win, and the home side still shorter: that is the home advantage and Juventus’s squad being priced, more than Wednesday’s results. The goals line, the number of goals the market splits the game at, is 2.5, with over at 2.06 and under at 1.87. Under being the shorter price means the market leans towards two goals or fewer. Juventus have the worse goal difference of the two, which fits.

What to watch

Napoli without Lobotka is the first thing. Gilmour or another midfielder has to do the job of the man who normally keeps the ball moving. Juventus’s response to Genoa is the second: Spalletti said his team never found “the right balance to really put the pressure on them,” and how high Juventus press on Sunday will show whether that has changed in four days.

Our lean, phrased as a possibility and not a forecast: with both sides short on confidence and the market already leaning under 2.5 goals, a tight, low-scoring game looks more likely than the four-goal night Napoli had at Monza. That is a lean about the shape of the match. It says nothing about who wins it.
