Porto play Napoli at the Estádio do Dragão on Wednesday 4 November at 14:00 CDMX (21:00 CET), in the fourth round of the Champions League's league phase. For readers in Mexico the name to watch is Santiago Giménez, the El Tri striker who joined Porto on loan from AC Milan at the end of August. Whether he starts is the first question of the evening; the second is whether a Porto side with no points can beat a Napoli side that arrives with seven players out.

## Why it matters

The league phase is a single table of 36 clubs. Each club plays eight different opponents; the top eight go straight to the last 16, places nine to 24 go into a play-off round in February, and the bottom 12 are out. Porto have lost all three of their games and are 35th of 36, above only Slovan Bratislava. Napoli have three points from one win and two defeats and are 24th, the last of the play-off places. Both are in or on the edge of the bottom 12, so this is close to a must-win for the home side and a game Napoli cannot afford to lose either.

UEFA's preview adds two lines of history: Porto are unbeaten in their last six home European games against Italian clubs, and Napoli have not won any of their last seven away games in the Champions League proper.

## Giménez

Giménez moved to Porto on 30 August on a loan that carries an option to buy, which could become an obligation depending on results, according to Excélsior. His start in Portugal was slow. On 10 October Récord reported that he had been left on the bench for a second game in a row, and quoted the Porto coach, Francesco Farioli, as saying the striker had already had more minutes than planned and had missed training after joining late from duty with Mexico, adding that he still had time to come back and make an impact. On 28 October Récord reported that Giménez started a Portuguese Cup game against Académico de Viseu and scored a penalty late in the first half, his second goal of the season.

UEFA's predicted Porto line-up for Wednesday, which is a prediction and not a confirmed team, does not include him: it has Diogo Costa in goal, Bednarek and Kiwior in the middle of defence, and Pepê, André Silva and Sainz in attack. UEFA lists William Gomes (ankle) and Pietuszewski (thigh) as doubtful for Porto and nobody as out. The official teams are due at 13:00 CDMX (20:00 CET); the card on this page carries the latest price.

## Napoli's absentees

Napoli's list is the longest of the night. UEFA names seven players out: Badiashile and Olivera (muscular), Di Lorenzo (adductor), Lobotka (ankle), Neres and Alisson Santos (thigh) and Spinazzola (leg). Kevin De Bruyne (ankle), Rasmus Højlund (illness) and Milinković-Savić (muscular) are doubtful. Højlund still appears in UEFA's predicted Napoli side, with Gilmour and McTominay in midfield and Politano and Lang either side of him; De Bruyne does not. UEFA's preview notes that De Bruyne needs one more appearance to become the second most capped Belgian in the competition. Napoli lost 2-0 at Juventus on Sunday and are eighth in Serie A on 14 points; their next league game is at home to Lazio on Sunday 8 November at 12:30 CET, which is 05:30 CDMX.

## How to read the market

BettingBeast's feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, has moved a long way on this game since Friday. At 13:54 CET on Friday Napoli were 3.18 to win, roughly a 31% chance by the price (divide 1 by the price to get the chance). The price was 3.20 at 22:23 CET on Sunday, around the final whistle at Juventus, 3.51 an hour later, 3.88 by Monday lunchtime and 4.15 at 06:23 CET on Wednesday, about a 24% chance. That is a fall of seven percentage points, which is a large move by this site's yardstick. Porto have gone the other way, from 2.25 on Friday to 2.00 on Wednesday morning, a rise from about 44% to about 50%, so the market now makes the home side the slight favourite, the team it thinks more likely to win. The draw has barely moved, from 3.71 to 3.85. Decimal odds show what you get back for each unit staked, including the stake.

The goals line, the total the market splits the match at, has been 2.5 at almost every capture since Friday, with over 2.5 goals at 1.81 and under at 2.22 at 06:23 CET on Wednesday, so the market leans towards three goals or more. The handicap, which gives one side a head start in goals, has swapped between level and Porto giving half a goal all week; at the latest capture it was Porto −0.5, with Porto at 2.00 and Napoli at 2.02 on that line. The feed picks whichever line is nearest to even money, so the swapping is how the feed works, not the market changing its mind. The chart on this page draws every capture.

## What to watch

Porto's problem is results: no points from three games, and four goals more conceded than scored, and Giménez was signed to help with the scoring half of that. If he starts, the evening is about whether a striker with two goals since August can take the chances Pepê and Sainz create; if he does not, it is about whether Farioli's choice of André Silva pays off. Napoli's problem is numbers: seven players out, Di Lorenzo and Lobotka among them, and a doubt over De Bruyne. A low-scoring game decided by one mistake looks more likely than an open one, whatever the goals line says; that is a reading of the two squads, not a forecast.
