Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund drew 2-2 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening, so the two clubs stay level at the top of the Bundesliga, the German top division, with 18 points each from eight games. Bayern led twice. Harry Kane, honoured before kick-off for winning the Ballon d’Or, hit the crossbar with a penalty at 2-1 up, and Dortmund substitute Fabio Silva scored the equaliser in the 89th minute.

Bayern’s assistant coach Aaron Danks, in charge again while head coach Vincent Kompany recovers from illness, said afterwards: “Obviously we’re disappointed in the end that we didn’t win.” The quote is from the club’s own website. Captain Joshua Kimmich, playing his first match for three weeks after a death in his family, went further: “I don’t think it was a fair draw.”

How the goals came

Konrad Laimer put Bayern ahead in the 38th minute, scoring at the second attempt after Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had saved his first shot. Michael Olise played the pass. It was Laimer’s first goal of the season and, the league’s match report notes, his first in the Bundesliga since March. A few minutes earlier Jobe Bellingham had scored for Dortmund, but the goal was ruled out after a video review found that Carney Chukwuemeka had fouled Bayern’s goalkeeper Jonas Urbig in the build-up.

Dortmund drew level in the 60th minute. Serhou Guirassy finished a move started by Nico Schlotterbeck and carried on by Chukwuemeka. Bayern went back in front in the 66th: Kimmich crossed, Kane headed the ball back across goal, and Dayot Upamecano scored.

In between came the moment of the night. In the 56th minute Felix Nmecha blocked a Kane shot with his arm and the referee gave a penalty. Kane, who had scored 25 of his previous 26 Bundesliga penalties according to the league’s report, struck the bar. He later hit the post as well.

Dortmund’s equaliser came with a minute of normal time left. Bayern’s Aleksandar Pavlović tried to clear, Karetsas charged the ball down, and Silva, on as a substitute, shot low into the far corner. The league’s own data gave that chance a 5% probability of being scored. In stoppage time Bayern’s Lennart Karl hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game.

One-sided, and still a draw

The numbers say Bayern should have won. The club’s website counted 23 Bayern shots, five of them on target. The league’s expected-goals figure, a measure of how many goals a team’s chances would usually produce, put Bayern’s chances at close to five goals’ worth and Dortmund’s at less than one. Dortmund sat deep for long spells, as they have all season: before Saturday they had conceded four league goals in seven games, the fewest in the division.

Sky Sports called the evening “a Halloween nightmare” for Kane, who had been presented to the crowd before kick-off with the Ballon d’Or, the award for the world’s best player over the past season, which he won on Monday.

Three more injuries for Bayern

The result is not the only cost. Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari both went off injured in the first half, within minutes of each other, and Olise also had to come off injured, the club’s website said. Bayern were already without Luis Díaz and Manuel Neuer, and Jamal Musiala was a doubt before the game. The club gave no detail on how long any of the three will be out.

“We’re entering a phase right now where every single player is important,” Laimer said on the club website. “We’re sticking together and hope to win the two matches before the international break.”

Kimmich, who had missed three games, said: “It’s been a very tough week. I’m glad to be back on the pitch. Now is the time to show whether we’re a team.”

What it means

Bayern and Dortmund both have five wins and three draws from eight games, and neither has lost. Bayern stay first on goal difference, which is goals scored minus goals conceded. Behind them, the chasing clubs played on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, so the full table settles later this weekend.

Both clubs now turn to the Champions League. Bayern are at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday 3 November at 21:00 CET, and Dortmund host Real Betis on Wednesday 4 November at 21:00 CET. The next league round is Saturday 7 November at 15:30 CET: Mainz host Bayern, and Dortmund host Elversberg. After that the Bundesliga stops for the November international break.

Kick-off times come from the fixture feed used across this site and can still change.
