Rafael Márquez has named a squad of 28 players for Mexico's Concacaf Nations League quarter-final against Jamaica, his first competitive games as coach of El Tri. The list was reported on Thursday 5 November by TUDN, Excélsior and Claro Sports. The first leg is in Kingston on Saturday 14 November at 19:00 CDMX (02:00 CET on Sunday 15 November), and the second leg is at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey on Tuesday 17 November at 20:30 CDMX (03:30 CET on Wednesday 18 November), according to Claro Sports. The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol's own website could not be read by this site on Friday morning, so the list below is as the three outlets published it.

## Who is in

Goalkeepers: Raúl Rangel (Chivas), Óscar García (León) and Alex Padilla (Athletic Club).

Defenders: César Montes (Lokomotiv), Johan Vásquez (Genoa), Rodrigo Huescas (Copenhagen), Kevin Álvarez (América), Jesús Gallardo (Toluca), Israel Reyes (América), Diego Campillo (Chivas), Jesús Orozco Chiquete (Cruz Azul) and Mateo Chávez (AZ Alkmaar).

Midfielders: Luis Romo (Chivas), Gilberto Mora (Tijuana), Obed Vargas (Atlético de Madrid), Erik Lira (Cruz Azul), Santiago Sandoval (Chivas), Andrés Montaño (Cruz Azul), Álvaro Fidalgo (Real Betis), Isaías Violante (América) and Erick Sánchez (América).

Forwards: Alexis Vega (Toluca), Armando González (Olympiacos), Roberto Alvarado (Chivas), Julián Quiñones (Al-Qadisiya), Santiago Giménez (Porto), Jesús "Tecatito" Corona (Monterrey) and Armando León (NK Osijek).

The clubs are as TUDN listed them, checked against Excélsior and Claro Sports. TUDN gave Orozco Chiquete's club as Chivas; Excélsior and Claro Sports gave Cruz Azul, and this piece follows them. Claro Sports listed Violante among the forwards rather than the midfielders.

## Who is back, and who is new

Tecatito Corona, now at Monterrey, is back in the squad, as are Alexis Vega, Rodrigo Huescas, who had a knee ligament injury, and Kevin Álvarez, whose last call-up was in November 2025, according to Claro Sports. Armando León, a 26-year-old forward at Osijek in Croatia, gets his first call-up; Excélsior called it a surprise. Andrés Montaño gets his second, after one in 2024 under Jaime Lozano, according to Excélsior.

Julián Quiñones returns with 40 goals in the calendar year for club and country, three short of the record of 43 set by Hugo Sánchez in 1988, according to TUDN.

## Who is out

Raúl Jiménez is not in the squad. He had surgery on his left knee in London in October and is out of Wolves' team until at least January, according to Fox Sports México, which reported about three months of rehabilitation. Edson Álvarez is also out; Excélsior wrote that he "remains out of action at West Ham". Henry Martín was left out although, as Claro Sports noted, he is the top Mexican scorer in the Apertura 2026 and second in the overall scoring chart. Luis Chávez and Germán Berterame of Inter Miami are also missing, according to Claro Sports. Julián Araujo is not in the list, and none of the three outlets explained why.

## The Europe-based players

Seven of the 28 play in the leagues this site covers or in the UEFA competitions. Santiago Giménez, on loan at Porto from AC Milan, came on and set up a goal in Porto's 4-1 win over Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday, which has its own piece on this site; Récord reported last week that his penalty against Académico de Viseu in the Taça de Portugal was only his second goal of the season. Obed Vargas is in the squad despite not having played a minute in La Liga for Atlético de Madrid this season; Récord quoted Diego Simeone on 2 November saying: "Es un chico que está trabajando muy bien." Atlético play Barcelona on Sunday 8 November at 14:00 CDMX (21:00 CET), a game previewed on this site. Johan Vásquez's Genoa host AC Milan on Sunday at 08:00 CDMX (15:00 CET). Álvaro Fidalgo's Betis go to Elche on Sunday at 07:00 CDMX (14:00 CET), and Alex Padilla's Athletic Club go to Osasuna on Saturday at 11:30 CDMX (18:30 CET). Armando González is at Olympiacos, Mateo Chávez at AZ Alkmaar.

## What it means

The Nations League quarter-final is played over two legs, with the winner on aggregate going to a final four in 2027, according to TUDN. These are Márquez's first competitive matches since he was appointed in July after the World Cup; his October friendlies ended without a win. No quote from Márquez accompanied the squad in any of the three outlets. After the October games he told Fox Sports México: "Hemos visto quién puede estar y quién no." The Thursday report in TUDN said the squad gathers in the Riviera Maya rather than at the federation's training centre, to prepare for the heat in Kingston.

Liga MX's Apertura 2026 continues this weekend with round 16, including Pumas against América at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario on Saturday 7 November at 21:00 CDMX (04:00 CET on Sunday), according to TUDN; América lead the table. The regular season ends on 22 November and the Liguilla, the end-of-season play-off, begins with the quarter-finals on 25 November.
