AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 at San Siro on Saturday night, in the first Milan derby of the season. All four goals came in the first half. Christian Pulisic scored in the fourth minute, Adrien Rabiot in the tenth, Alessandro Bastoni pulled one back for Inter in the 22nd, and Diego Moreira's free kick in first-half stoppage time settled it.

It was Inter's first defeat in Serie A this season after eight wins and a draw. They stay on 25 points but drop to second behind Lazio, who also have 25 and a better goal difference, which is goals scored minus goals conceded. Lazio play Cagliari at home at 15:00 CET on Sunday and can go three points clear.

## How Milan did it

Milan's coach Rúben Amorim named a side with Moreira on the right of midfield, and the winger made the match. In the fourth minute he went down the right and crossed for Pulisic to head in. Six minutes later Rabiot turned in Moreira's corner, with the ball going in off the far post, according to the club's match report. Just before half-time Moreira took the free kick himself and floated it over the wall with his left foot.

Inter's goal came from a corner too. Hakan Çalhanoğlu delivered, Manuel Akanji flicked the ball on at the near post and Bastoni scored from close range. For a spell after that Inter were the better side. Milan's goalkeeper Mike Maignan made a reaction save from Djed Spence in the 33rd minute, tipped a Çalhanoğlu shot over and kept out a header from Marcus Thuram, ESPN's report says. Inter also asked for a penalty for handball against Mario Gila, but the video review found the ball had hit his midriff.

In the second half Inter had the ball without creating much. Cristian Chivu, their coach, made five changes between the 72nd and 82nd minutes, bringing on Zieliński, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco, Bonny and Esposito. Milan's substitute Alphadjo Cissè almost added a fourth in stoppage time, and Josep Martínez tipped the shot over. The referee was Guida. There were no red cards.

## What it changes

Milan are now unbeaten in five derbies in a row, according to ESPN, and move to 21 points from ten games. The feed this site uses for tables, last refreshed on Saturday morning, had them fifth on 18 before kick-off; ESPN's table after the match puts them fourth. Roma, on 21 from nine games, played Udinese on Saturday evening, so the exact order behind the top two depends on that result and on Sunday's games.

For Inter the damage is to a record more than to the table. Nine league games without defeat had put them level at the top; one night at San Siro has left them second and chasing a Lazio side that has not lost either. Inter are also 20th in the Champions League table with three points from three games, and they go to Feyenoord on Tuesday 3 November at 21:00 CET.

Pulisic's goal came a day after the club announced that he has extended his contract. He joined Milan ahead of the 2023-24 season.
