Stuttgart won 4-2 at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday 31 October, the home side's first defeat at the BayArena this season, in a weekend that left the top of the Bundesliga exactly as it was: Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund level on 18 points after eight rounds, after their 2-2 draw in Munich. Eintracht Frankfurt beat Hamburg 3-1 on Sunday, and Union Berlin and Köln drew 1-1.

## Stuttgart's six-goal afternoon in Leverkusen

Stuttgart led 2-0 inside 22 minutes. Ermedin Demirović turned in a loose ball in the 14th after a one-two between Bilal El Khannouss and Deniz Undav had forced a save from Mark Flekken, and Jamie Leweling finished from a corner in the 22nd, according to the league's official match report. Patrik Schick headed in an Aleix García corner in the 28th to make it 2-1, but El Khannouss restored the two-goal lead from about 20 yards in the 51st and Demirović scored his second in the 65th from Undav's pass across goal. Ibrahim Maza's header in the 79th was the last goal.

The report notes that Leverkusen's head coach Carles Martínez made five changes from the midweek cup win, with Lucas Vázquez making his first league start in two months, and that Stuttgart's coach Sebastian Hoeneß also rotated, leaving out Angelo Stiller with an adductor injury. Both sides hit the woodwork. The league's own expected-goals figure, an estimate of how many goals a team's chances were worth, was 3.23 for Stuttgart and 1.77 for Leverkusen, so the scoreline was not a freak.

Our preview on Saturday had described two long injury lists and a Stuttgart side living two different seasons at once, strong in Europe and struggling in the league. The win lifts them to 11th on nine points, with three wins and five defeats. Leverkusen stay sixth on 13.

## The rest of the weekend

Bayern and Dortmund drew 2-2 on Saturday evening, as we reported on Sunday, with Harry Kane hitting the bar from a penalty. Both now have five wins and three draws. Freiburg won 2-1 at Augsburg and are third on 16. RB Leipzig won 2-0 at Schalke and have 15, as do Werder Bremen, who beat Hoffenheim 2-0. Borussia Mönchengladbach and Paderborn drew 0-0, which leaves Gladbach bottom on four points, two behind Schalke.

On Sunday, Frankfurt beat Hamburg 3-1 to move to eighth on 11 points; Hamburg are 15th on nine. Union Berlin's 1-1 draw with Köln leaves Union 16th on seven points, the relegation play-off place. The play-off, a two-legged tie at the end of the season between the team that finishes 16th in the Bundesliga and the team that finishes third in the second division, decides the last place in the top flight.

## The table after eight rounds

Bayern 18, Dortmund 18, Freiburg 16, Leipzig 15, Werder 15, Leverkusen 13, Elversberg 13, Frankfurt 11, Mainz 10, Augsburg 9, Stuttgart 9, Hoffenheim 9, Köln 9, Paderborn 9, Hamburg 9, Union Berlin 7, Schalke 6, Gladbach 4. Bayern are ahead of Dortmund on goal difference, plus 19 to plus 8. Six teams share nine points between tenth and fifteenth, so one result moves a club several places either way.
