Manchester City won 3-2 at RB Leipzig on Wednesday 4 November, in the fourth round of the Champions League's league phase. City led three times and Leipzig came back twice: a Castello Lukeba own goal put City in front, Ridle Baku levelled, Enzo Fernández restored the lead, Antonio Nusa made it 2-2, and Erling Haaland scored the winner in the 78th minute. It was City's first win since two Premier League defeats in a row, and it lifts them to seventh in the 36-club table. This report is written a day late, because no full account of the game was available on the sources this site uses by the end of Wednesday night.

## How it happened

Leipzig had the better of the early going, according to the Bundesliga's official report: Nusa forced a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma and David Raum had a shot blocked. Christoph Baumgartner started for Leipzig for the first time since coming back from injury, and Baku came into the side. Haaland captained City, and Joško Gvardiol, who played for Leipzig between 2020 and 2023, was on the bench.

The first goal was an accident. In the 37th minute Lukeba, the Leipzig defender, turned a low cross from Nico O'Reilly into his own net, as the Bundesliga's report describes it, and City led 1-0 at half-time.

The second half had four goals in half an hour. Baku levelled in the 49th minute from a tight angle on the right, set up by Brajan Gruda. In the 58th Fernández headed City back in front from ten yards after a cross from Iliman Ndiaye. Three minutes later Christopher Nkunku, who had come on for Baumgartner, set up Nusa, who drove the ball into the bottom corner for 2-2 in the 61st minute.

Raum hit the crossbar with a free kick and Rayan Cherki hit the woodwork for City before the winner. In the 78th minute Haaland slid in to meet a ball across the box from Elliot Anderson and put City 3-2 up. A late finish by Gruda was ruled out for offside. The Bundesliga's report records that Leipzig had 14 shots to City's 13, and names no card or penalty.

Haaland's goal was his 13th in nine games against Leipzig, by UEFA's count of 12 in eight before this one, which our preview carried.

## What it changes

The league phase is one table of 36 clubs. Each club plays eight different opponents; the top eight go straight to the last 16, places nine to 24 go into a play-off round in February, and the bottom 12 are out. City have nine points from four games, three wins and a defeat, and are seventh. Leipzig have three points, from one win and three defeats, and are 29th, five places below the line that keeps a club in Europe.

Both are back in their leagues on Saturday 7 November. City, second in the Premier League with 21 points from nine games, three behind Arsenal, go to Nottingham Forest at 18:30 CET; our preview of that game is linked below. Leipzig, fourth in the Bundesliga with 15 points from eight games, three behind Bayern and Dortmund, host Augsburg at 15:30 CET. Both kick-off times come from the fixture feed used on this site. City's next European game is at home to Napoli in the fifth round, on 24 and 25 November.

## What the market said

A betting price is a crowd's opinion written as a number, and dividing 1 by the price gives a rough chance. City, the favourite, won. The goals line was 3.5, with over 3.5 goals at 1.81 and under at 2.29, and the game had five.
