Manchester United beat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November, in the fourth round of the Champions League's league phase, after trailing 2-0 at half-time. Matías Soulé and a Donyell Malen penalty had Roma two goals up inside 17 minutes. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot after 58 minutes, and Matheus Cunha scored twice in four minutes, after 83 and 86, before being sent off in stoppage time. It was United's first win in ten games in all competitions, and their first since September.

## How it happened

Roma scored first after 11 minutes. According to Sky Sport Italia's live commentary, Rodrigo Mora played a long pass from the left and Soulé, almost alone in the box, controlled it and finished with his left foot. Five minutes later Ayden Heaven was penalised for handball, and Malen sent goalkeeper Senne Lammens the wrong way from the spot for 2-0 after 17 minutes. Soulé and Fernandes were both booked after an argument two minutes later, and Roma lost Devyne Rensch to a muscle injury after 22 minutes, with Lulli coming on. Sky Sports' report says the home crowd booed United off at half-time.

The second half turned on a penalty. Cunha won it, and Fernandes scored after a retake, after 58 minutes, as Sky Sports describes it; the report does not say why the first attempt was taken again. Sky Sports also reports that Carlos Baleba went off early in the second half with a hamstring injury. United kept pushing: Bryan Mbeumo hit both posts with one shot, Roma cleared another effort off the line, and United appealed twice more for penalties.

The equaliser came after 83 minutes. Leonardo Balerdi's clearance went wrong, in Sky Sports' words "his woeful clearance allowing Cunha to slot home the leveller". Three minutes later Shea Lacey, a substitute, played Cunha in and Cunha finished at the near post for 3-2.

In the first minute of stoppage time Cunha was sent off, for what Sky Sports calls "a silly foul", and United defended the last minutes with ten men. The win ended a run of 54 days without one.

## What it changes

United go up to 17th in the 36-team table on six points from four games: two wins and two defeats, with as many goals scored as conceded. Roma stay on four points, with one win, one draw and two defeats, and are 19th after being 15th in the morning. The top eight go straight to the last 16; places nine to 24 go into a play-off round in February. Half the clubs have played only three games, so the order will move again after Wednesday's nine matches.

Roma's run as the only unbeaten side in Serie A is not affected: this was a European game. Their next league match is at home to Sassuolo on Saturday 7 November at 20:45 CET. United host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday 8 November at 17:30 CET. A red card normally carries a suspension in the same competition, so the Premier League game is not the one Cunha's dismissal threatens; the length of any ban is for UEFA to confirm.

## What the market said

A betting price is a crowd's opinion written as a number, and dividing 1 by the price gives a rough chance. The last price BettingBeast's feed captured before kick-off, at 20:23 CET, made United the favourite at 2.15, about a 47% chance. Roma were 3.19, about a 31% chance, and the draw 4.33, about 23%. United, the favourite, won. The goals line was 3.5, with over at 2.32 and under at 1.75, and the game had five.
