Celtic won their first Europa League game of the season, Bayer Leverkusen lost their first, and Sunderland were booed off at the Stadium of Light on a Thursday night, 5 November, that moved the league-phase table in several places. The Europa League's league phase is one table of 36 clubs; each plays eight different opponents, the top eight go straight to the last 16 and the next 16 play off for the remaining places. Thursday was round four, the halfway point. Milan's 0-2 home defeat by Ferencváros and Bournemouth's 3-1 win at Sparta Prague have their own reports on this site; this piece covers the rest.

## Celtic 3-2 Beşiktaş

Celtic were behind after 54 minutes at Celtic Park, when Junior Olaitan tapped in the rebound after Sam Johnstone had saved his penalty, according to Sky Sports' report. Two substitutes turned it: Callum Osmand equalised after 65 minutes and Camilo Durán put Celtic ahead after 79. Orkun Kökçü levelled for Beşiktaş after 85, and Durán scored again two minutes later. UEFA's round-up notes that neither side had a shot on target in the first half. Celtic had no points from three games before kick-off. Their manager, Martin O'Neill, called it, as quoted by Sky Sports, "a terrific win, in every aspect."

## Leverkusen 0-1 Marseille

Leverkusen had won all three of their games before Thursday and went into the night, as their own website put it, hoping to go "to the very top of the European stage at the fourth attempt". Amine Gouiri scored for Marseille after 77 minutes, according to Sky Sports' match page, and that was the game. Marseille had no points from three before kick-off. Leverkusen stay on nine points. Their head coach, Carles Martínez, had no quote on an allowed source by Friday morning; Marseille's Bruno Génésio likewise.

## AZ Alkmaar 1-2 Juventus

Teun Koopmeiners scored after 19 minutes against the club he left, and against a side containing his brother Peer, according to UEFA's round-up. Randal Kolo Muani made it 2-0 after 37, and Mexx Meerdink pulled one back for AZ after 88, according to ESPN's player statistics for the game. Juventus's website says the win takes them to ten points from four games. Their coach, Luciano Spalletti, said in the club's press-room summary: "We won a tough match by playing excellent football."

## Sunderland 0-2 Dinamo Zagreb

Sunderland, bottom of the Premier League, lost at home to goals from Luka Stojković, a volley from a corner, and Dion Beljo, set up by Stojković, both in the first half; Sky Sports' match page times them at 22 and 39 minutes, while its written report says 23 and 40. Sky Sports reports that Sunderland hit the woodwork twice, through Thomas Meunier and Kevin Danso, had a Wilson Isidor goal ruled out for offside after a VAR check, and were booed at half-time and at the end. Their head coach, Régis Le Bris, made four changes at half-time. He said afterwards, as carried by Sky Sports: "We are unlucky because we created many chances but it wasn't enough." Sunderland had been unbeaten in the competition until Thursday, according to UEFA.

## Crystal Palace 1-1 Hoffenheim

Palace, who had lost three Premier League games in a row, were behind after seven minutes at Selhurst Park when Alexander Prass's shot got past Dean Henderson, and equalised in the first minute of added time through Daichi Kamada, according to Sky Sports and the club's own report. In between, Adam Wharton was sent off after 77 minutes for a second yellow card, for catching Wouter Burger with his arm in an aerial challenge. The club's report notes that Hoffenheim had never beaten an English side. Palace have five points at the halfway point, Hoffenheim four. Palace's head coach, Pierre Sage, was asked why Axel Disasi had been left out of the squad and said, as quoted by Sky Sports: "It's an internal decision. I don't want to comment." Palace play Liverpool at home on Sunday at 15:00 CET; that game has its own preview on this site.

## Benfica 3-1 Lech Poznań, and the other scores

Benfica are the only side with a perfect record and a goal difference to match: Rafa Silva scored after six minutes, Gianluca Prestianni after 67 and Heorhiy Sudakov after 90, with Lech's goal from Bengtsson in between after 72, according to Sky Sports' match page. UEFA's round-up says Benfica "survived a late scare" to stay perfect.

Celta Vigo lost 1-2 at home to Union Saint-Gilloise, who came from behind after Durán's early goal with two from Zeneli, after 35 and 49 minutes. Real Sociedad drew 1-1 with Lyon, Óskarsson scoring after 28 minutes and Corentin Tolisso after 54. Elsewhere, according to UEFA's fixtures page: Lillestrøm 0-1 Viktoria Plzeň, NEC Nijmegen 3-1 Omonia, Levski Sofia 1-0 Jagiellonia, Anderlecht 2-0 Salzburg, Hapoel Beer-Sheva 0-2 OFI Crete, Torreense 3-2 Ararat-Armenia and Sturm Graz 2-3 Celje. Rennes drew 0-0 with Olympiacos on Wednesday afternoon.

## What the table looks like

No allowed source had published a full table by Friday morning: UEFA's standings page did not render, and Sky Sports' table was last updated before Thursday's games. By this site's reading of the results, Benfica, Bournemouth and Ferencváros have twelve points from four games; Juventus, Union Saint-Gilloise and Olympiacos have ten; Leverkusen have nine. Ararat-Armenia are the only club still without a point, because Plzeň, Marseille and Celtic all won on Thursday. UEFA's round-up lists Dion Beljo and Bryan Linssen as the competition's top scorers, with four goals each.

The next round is on Thursday 26 November, after the international break. Milan, with three points and now outside the top 24, go to Olympiacos; Sunderland host Jagiellonia; Crystal Palace host Real Sociedad; Juventus host Omonia.
