Newcastle United and Everton meet for the second time in five days on Monday 2 November, at St James’ Park at 21:00 CET, in the last game of the Premier League’s tenth round. Everton won the first meeting 3-1 at their own ground on Thursday, in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, the English league cup. That result ended Newcastle’s interest in the competition, as the club’s own match report put it, and it gives a mid-table league game an edge it would not otherwise have.

Why it matters

Neither side is where it wants to be. Newcastle are 12th with 11 points from eight games: three wins, two draws and three defeats. Everton are 14th with 10 points from eight: two wins, four draws and two defeats. Because this is the round’s final game, both have played one match fewer than the clubs around them, and the table is tight enough for one result to move either of them several places. A Newcastle win takes them to 14 points, level with Brentford in sixth. An Everton win takes them to 13, past Bournemouth, Tottenham and Aston Villa into the top half. A draw leaves both roughly where they are.

For Newcastle there is also the matter of Thursday. The club’s report of the cup tie describes “a profligate Newcastle”, meaning a side that wasted its chances, going 3-0 down to goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry before Dan Burn headed in late. Head coach Matthias Jaissle made changes for that game; Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Joelinton all came on at half-time. Monday is the first chance to answer it with the strongest available team.

The week around it

The international break follows next weekend’s round, so this is the start of each club’s last two league games before a fortnight off. Newcastle go to Fulham on Saturday 7 November at 16:00 CET. Everton host Coventry on Friday 6 November at 21:00 CET. Coventry, 16th in the table, beat Newcastle 4-1 earlier this season, a game in which Joelinton was sent off for two yellow cards; the referee that day was John Brooks, and the club’s announcement of Monday’s officials notes that Brooks is in charge again. The same announcement says Brooks has shown three red cards in his last three Premier League games.

Team news

Everton expect Jarrad Branthwaite back. The defender had a concussion and missed the club’s last two games under the concussion protocol, the rules that keep a player out for a set period after a head injury. “Jarrad should have recovered from his concussion and also the timescale which we had to abide by,” manager David Moyes said on the club website on Friday. The Premier League’s availability notes still list him at a 75% chance of playing. Asked whether the cup tie had produced any other concerns, Moyes said “I think so” before adding that “you never know until you get them back in the following day.”

Newcastle’s last published update came from Jaissle on Tuesday, before the cup game. Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Lewis Miley were “still doubtful”, he said: “We need to see step-by-step over the next two days to decide if they’re able to be in the squad or not.” On Tino Livramento he said only that he hoped to have him back soon and would not put a date on it. The availability notes on Monday morning list Miley (muscular injury) and Fernandez-Pardo (illness) at 75% each, Will Osula at 50% with an ankle problem noted on Thursday, and Livramento and Ewen Jaouen as out with no return date. Osula started the cup tie and was replaced at half-time.

No confirmed team news beyond that as of 07:30 CET. The official line-ups are due at 19:45 CET, 75 minutes before kick-off.

How to read the market

BettingBeast’s feed, read every 30 minutes, has not had a settled view of this game. On Friday afternoon at 13:54 CET Newcastle were 2.38 to win, a 42% chance by the price (divide 1 by the price to get the chance), with Everton at 3.17 (32%) and the draw at 3.72 (27%). By Saturday evening at 21:38 CET, with the cup result two days old, Newcastle had drifted to 2.47 (40%) and Everton had shortened to 3.02 (33%). Since then the move has reversed: at 06:23 CET on Monday Newcastle were 2.32 (43%), Everton 3.27 (31%) and the draw 3.63 (28%). None of those shifts is large, about three percentage points at most from end to end, which is why this appears here as a paragraph rather than as a Markets article. The goals line is 2.5, with over at 1.77 and under at 2.24, so the market leans towards three goals or more. The card above carries the live price.

What to watch

The first half-hour. Everton scored twice before the break on Thursday and Newcastle spent the second half chasing; Jaissle’s half-time changes that night tell you which players he thinks can turn a game, and whether Wissa and Elanga start on Monday is the first thing to look for when the teams arrive. Branthwaite’s return matters more to Everton than any single selection, because a centre-back who has missed two games walks straight back into a side that kept Newcastle to one goal without him.

A low-scoring game would be a surprise to the price. A Newcastle win by a single goal looks the likeliest single result to us, with the home side’s strongest team back on the pitch; a second Everton win in five days is priced at a little under one chance in three.
