Lens’ price to beat Marseille at home on Sunday night has lengthened from 2.13 to 2.39 at BettingBeast in the week since the feed first carried the game, and the move came in three steps, the first of them while Lens were losing 1-9 to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The game, ninth against sixth in Ligue 1, kicks off at 20:45 CET at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis and closes the French weekend.

What moved

BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, first carried the game at 21:23 CET on Sunday 1 November: Lens 2.13 to win, the draw 4.00, Marseille 3.13. Turning a price into a chance, called the implied probability, means dividing one by the price, so Lens were about a 47% chance then and Marseille about a 32%.

For three days nothing happened. Lens were still 2.13 at 20:22 CET on Wednesday 4 November, when they were about to kick off against Como. Then came the first step: 2.17 at 22:22 CET, during the second half of that game, 2.23 at 23:22 CET, just after the final whistle, and 2.27 at 00:23 CET on Thursday. Marseille went the other way, 3.29 to 3.09. The second step came on Thursday night into Friday: at 01:22 CET on Friday 6 November, a few hours after Marseille had won 1-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, Lens were 2.29 and Marseille 3.04. The third came on Friday afternoon: Lens 2.32 at 10:47 CET and 2.39 at 15:22 CET, with Marseille at 2.93. Since then the Lens price has not moved at all, and at the 06:22 CET capture on Sunday, the price on the card above, it was Lens 2.39, the draw 3.99, Marseille 2.94.

Over the week Lens have gone from a 47% chance to a 42%, a fall of five percentage points; Marseille from 32% to 34%. The Lens move is well above the three-point mark this site treats as a real move.

What did not move

The draw has not moved at all, 4.00 to 3.99. The handicap, the goal start given to one side to even the contest, was Lens giving half a goal every hour from Sunday to Thursday morning; since Thursday it has switched between that and a level line, where neither side gives a start and a draw returns stakes, and has sat on the level line for most of the time since Friday afternoon. The feed picks whichever line has the two prices closest to even money, so the switching itself is how the feed works; what it says here is that Lens have gone from clearly giving a start to sitting on the edge of giving none, which is the same story as the main market. At the 06:22 CET capture the feed showed Lens giving half a goal at 2.39, with Marseille at 1.72 to win or draw. The goals line has flipped between 2.5 and 3.5 all week the same way; at the capture it was 2.5, with over at 1.54 and under at 2.73, so the market expects goals.

The public reasons

The first step has an obvious cause and a precise time. Como won 9-1 at Lens on Wednesday 4 November, a margin UEFA says equals the biggest win in the Champions League’s history, with a hat-trick from Douvikas and Lens’ only goal from Aguilar in the 65th minute, according to ESPN’s match page. The price began to move while the goals were still going in and settled by the small hours. Conceding nine at home, in any competition, is the kind of night a market reacts to, and it did.

The second step fits Marseille’s result rather than Lens’. Marseille won 1-0 at Leverkusen in the Europa League on Thursday 5 November, Amine Gouiri scoring after 77 minutes according to Sky Sports’ match page, their first points of the league phase after three defeats. By 01:22 CET on Friday Marseille had shortened from 3.09 to 3.04 and Lens had drifted to 2.29.

For Friday afternoon’s step, the largest of the three, no public reason was found on an allowed source. Friday is press conference day in France, and team news from either club may explain it, but neither club’s website could be read by this site on Sunday morning, so this piece does not guess. Bruno Génésio’s Marseille are sixth on 15 points from nine games, five wins and four defeats; Lens are ninth on 13, four wins, a draw and four defeats, with a goal difference of plus three in the league before Wednesday’s night in Europe.

What it means

A fall of five percentage points for a home side in a week is a clear move, and the chart on this page shows it as a staircase rather than a drift: three steps, each with a time, two of them with a reason. It does not mean Lens cannot win on Sunday; at 2.39 they are still the side the market thinks slightly more likely to win, a 42% chance against Marseille’s 34%, with the draw at 25%. It means the people pricing the game think a little less of Lens than they did a week ago, mostly because of what they saw on Wednesday night. The closing price, the last one captured before kick-off, goes into this site’s record and is what Monday’s “what the market got wrong” piece will measure the result against.
