Juventus beat Napoli 2-0 in Turin on Sunday night, on the day the club turned 129 years old. The game had no goals for 70 minutes. Then Alajbegovic scored, Napoli’s Marianucci was sent off for a second yellow card, and Jérémie Boga curled in a second with three minutes left. Both clubs went into the game on 14 points; Juventus leave it on 17.
How it happened
Juventus’ own match report has the details. Napoli had the first real chance, after seven minutes, when Guglielmo Vicario, the Juventus goalkeeper, kept out a shot from Lorenzo Lucca. Juventus then took over. Juan Cabal headed a Douglas Luiz corner against the post after 27 minutes, Alajbegovic volleyed over from a Randal Kolo Muani cross soon after, and just before half-time Alex Meret, the Napoli goalkeeper, pushed away a left-footed shot from Alajbegovic. Half-time, 0-0.
Both coaches changed their teams at the break. Luciano Spalletti sent on Federico Gatti for Weston McKennie. Napoli replaced Giovanni Di Lorenzo with Amir Rrahmani and Kevin De Bruyne with Billy Gilmour. The game turned in the 70th minute. Edon Zhegrova, on for Kolo Muani since the 59th minute, went past Rrahmani and set up Alajbegovic, who scored from inside the box.
About five minutes later Marianucci, already on a yellow card, fouled Cabal and was shown a second yellow. The Juventus report lists it as a sending-off, so Napoli played the last quarter of an hour with ten men. Alajbegovic went off straight after his goal, in the 72nd minute, and his replacement scored the second: after a passing move in the 87th minute, Boga curled a shot into the far corner. The report mentions no penalty and no decision by the video referee.
One line in the Juventus report is worth noting. It lists Napoli’s coach for the night as Landucci rather than Massimiliano Allegri, and it does not say why.
What it changes
Juventus move up to seventh with 17 points from ten games: five wins, two draws, three defeats. Napoli stay on 14 points and drop to eighth, with four wins, two draws and four defeats. The gap to the top is wide for both. Lazio lead Serie A on 28 points after beating Cagliari on Sunday afternoon, Inter have 25 and Roma 24. Como hold fourth place, the last Champions League spot, on 23 points, so Juventus are six points off it and Napoli nine.
Both teams play in Europe this week. Napoli go to Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday 4 November at 21:00 CET. Juventus play AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday 5 November at 21:00 CET, as our preview noted. Next Sunday, 8 November, Napoli host the leaders Lazio at 12:30 CET, and Juventus go to Fiorentina at 20:45 CET.
