Parma beat Atalanta 3-0 in Bergamo on Monday 2 November, the last game of Serie A’s tenth round, and Fiorentina won 4-2 at Sassuolo earlier in the evening. Both results move teams out of the bottom three, and both leave Atalanta looking down the table rather than up it.

How Parma did it

Parma took the lead four minutes before half-time, when Giovanni Fabbian headed in a corner from Sierro, according to the club’s own match report. Two minutes into the second half the lead doubled: Toure crossed from the right and Davide Zappacosta, the Atalanta defender, turned the ball into his own net. Lontani added the third in the 58th minute with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Atalanta had the better of the first 25 minutes, with two chances for Charles De Ketelaere and one for Zappacosta before the break, the report says, but did not score, and there were no red cards.

Alberto Gilardino, Parma’s head coach, said afterwards that he was very happy for the team and the club, that Parma had struggled in the opening 25 minutes and grown in confidence after the first goal, and that the side is on the right track, according to the club website. Maurizio Sarri, Atalanta’s head coach, named a team with Krstović up front and De Ketelaere behind him, and made four changes from the 62nd minute on.

Fiorentina’s night

The data feed used on this site has Fiorentina’s win at Sassuolo at 4-2 after a 1-1 half-time score, so three of the four Fiorentina goals came after the break. We could not reach a club match report for the game on Tuesday morning, so we leave the scorers to the official record and stick to what the result does to the table.

What it changes

The bottom of Serie A is now very tight. Parma, Fiorentina and Sassuolo all have eight points from ten games, in 15th, 16th and 17th. Monza are 18th on seven, one point behind that group, Udinese 19th on five and Venezia bottom on three. Three teams go down from Serie A each season, so the gap between 17th, which is safe, and 18th, which is not, is currently one point and could change every week.

Atalanta’s problem is different. They have 11 points from ten games, three wins, two draws and five defeats, and sit 13th, closer to the relegation places than to the European ones: six points above 18th, nine behind Frosinone in sixth. It was a home defeat by three goals to a side that started the day on five points.

At the top, nothing changed on Monday. Lazio lead with 28 points from ten games and are still unbeaten, three ahead of Inter, who lost the derby on Saturday, with Roma, the only other unbeaten side, on 24 and Como on 23. Milan have 21, Frosinone 20, Juventus 17 after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Napoli, who are eighth on 14.

Elsewhere on Monday, Deportivo beat Osasuna 2-1 in La Liga, coming from 1-0 down at half-time, and Brest won 2-0 at Lorient in Ligue 1 with both goals in the second half, per the fixture feed. Deportivo move to 14 points, eighth in Spain; Brest and Lorient both have 12 in France.
