Barcelona drift from 1.83 to 2.14 to win at Atlético, and almost all of the move came overnight before Sunday's game
Barcelona were 1.83 at 01:23 CET on Saturday and 2.14 at 06:22 CET on Sunday, a fall from a 55% chance to a 47% chance by the price. Atlético have shortened from 3.99 to 3.65. Kick-off 21:00 CET at the Metropolitano.
Barcelona’s price to win at Atlético Madrid on Sunday night has lengthened from 1.83 to 2.14 at BettingBeast, and nearly the whole move came in the eight hours between Saturday night and Sunday morning. The game, first against third in La Liga, kicks off at 21:00 CET at the Metropolitano in Madrid. It is the last club match before the international break, and after Real Madrid’s win at Valencia on Saturday it decides who ends the weekend on top.
What moved
BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, first carried the game at 21:23 CET on Sunday 1 November: Atlético 3.79 to win, the draw 4.47, Barcelona 1.85. Turning a price into a chance, called the implied probability, means dividing one by the price, so Barcelona were about a 54% chance then and Atlético about a 26%.
The price barely moved all week. Barcelona went out to 1.92 on Tuesday morning and back to 1.85 by Thursday, which is where this site’s preview on Thursday found it. By 01:23 CET on Saturday 7 November they had shortened a little further, to 1.83, their shortest price of the week, with Atlético at 3.99: a 55% chance against a 25%.
Then the move. At 22:23 CET on Saturday Barcelona were 1.86. At 00:22 CET on Sunday, 1.89. At 02:23 CET, 1.94. At 04:22 CET, 2.01. At 06:22 CET, the capture on the card above, 2.14, with Atlético at 3.65 and the draw at 4.53. Over those eight hours Barcelona’s chance by the price fell from 54% to 47%, a drop of seven percentage points, and Atlético’s rose from 26% to 27%. Measured from Saturday’s low point it is eight points, and from the first capture a week ago it is seven. All of those are well above the three-point mark this site treats as a real move.
What did not move
The draw has hardly changed, 4.47 to 4.53, less than half a percentage point. The goals line, the number of goals the market splits the match at, has been 3.5 all week, meaning the two prices are for four goals or more and for three or fewer, and at 06:22 CET it was over 1.92 and under 2.05, almost exactly where it opened at 1.91 and 2.00. The handicap, the goal start given to the weaker side to even the contest, has been Atlético plus half a goal for most of the week, switching now and then to a full goal; the feed picks whichever line has the two prices closest to even money, so the switching is how the feed works, not the market changing its mind. What did move on that line is the price: at 22:23 CET on Saturday Atlético were 2.12 to win or draw with the half-goal start, and at 06:22 CET on Sunday they were 1.85. That is the same story as the main market told a second way.
The public reasons
No public reason was found on an allowed source. The timing fits no team news that this site could read. Barcelona’s own website published Hansi Flick’s press conference on Saturday evening, and the news in it was good for Barcelona, not bad: Flick said Eric García and Andreas Christensen “will be with the team”, that Eric “could start, but we’ll see tomorrow”, and that Frenkie de Jong is fully fit, adding “we have to choose the best starting eleven.” The club’s report on Saturday’s training said the session “featured all available first-team players, with Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen both returning to training with the group”, and that the squad travels to Madrid on Sunday morning. The only confirmed absentee is Rodri, who the club said on Wednesday has a right hamstring injury and “will miss the game against Atlético Madrid.”
Atlético’s squad list and Diego Simeone’s press conference are on the club’s website, but the pages could not be read by this site on Sunday morning, so whether Atlético have had good news of their own is not known here. The one thing that did happen on Saturday night was in Valencia: Real Madrid won 3-0 at the Mestalla, with goals from Valverde, Arda Güler and Mbappé, their eighth win in a row in the league and the Champions League according to the club’s own report. That changed the table, not Barcelona’s team, and a price does not usually move seven points on another team’s result.
What it means for the table
Barcelona have 30 points from eleven games, Real Madrid 30 from twelve, Atlético 28 from eleven. A Barcelona win on Sunday puts them on 33, three clear of Real Madrid with a game in hand and five clear of Atlético. An Atlético win puts them on 31, top of the table on their own, with Barcelona and Real Madrid level on 30 behind them. A draw leaves Barcelona on 31, one ahead of Real Madrid, and Atlético on 29. Then nothing happens in La Liga for two weeks.
A seven-point fall is a clear move, not noise, and the chart on this page shows it came in one overnight burst rather than a slow drift. It does not mean Barcelona have stopped being the favourite: at 2.14 they are still the side the market thinks more likely to win, at a 47% chance against Atlético’s 27% and a 22% draw. It means the people pricing the game think Barcelona a good deal less likely to win than they did on Saturday afternoon, for a reason that is not public on any page this site is allowed to read. The official teams are due at about 20:00 CET; the card on this page carries the latest price, and the closing price, the last one captured before kick-off, goes into this site’s record and is what Monday’s “what the market got wrong” piece will measure the result against.
