Milan drift from 1.77 to 2.00 to win at Genoa: slowly all week, then one step on Sunday morning

Milan were 1.77 at 15:22 CET on Sunday 1 November and 2.00 at 06:22 CET on Sunday, a fall from a 57% chance to a 50% chance by the price. The draw and Genoa's price have barely moved. Kick-off 15:00 CET.

Milan’s price to win at Genoa on Sunday afternoon has lengthened from 1.77 to 2.00 at BettingBeast in the week since the feed first carried the game. Most of the move was a slow drift that began the day after Milan beat Inter in the derby, and the last and largest single step came at the 06:22 CET capture on Sunday morning. The game kicks off at 15:00 CET at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, where Milan, fifth in Serie A, visit a Genoa side 12th.

What moved

BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, first carried the game at 15:22 CET on Sunday 1 November, the afternoon after Milan’s 3-1 win over Inter: Genoa 4.74 to win, the draw 3.64, Milan 1.77. Turning a price into a chance, called the implied probability, means dividing one by the price, so Milan were about a 57% chance then and Genoa about a 21%.

Milan drifted the same evening, to 1.84 by 22:23 CET on Sunday, and then crept out a little at a time: 1.85 on Tuesday, 1.87 on Friday morning, 1.88 by 02:22 CET on Saturday. By Saturday night, at 00:54 CET on Sunday, it was 1.89, with Genoa 4.80 and the draw 3.59. That is a week-long fall from a 57% chance to a 53%, a little under four percentage points, and nothing in it happened in a hurry.

The step came at the end. At 02:22 CET on Sunday Milan were 1.90; at 04:22 CET, 1.89; at 06:22 CET, the capture on the card above, 2.00. That last hour and a half took Milan’s chance by the price from 53% to 50%, so the whole move since the first capture is six and a half percentage points, above the three-point mark this site treats as a real move. Because the final step is a single capture, the card on this page is the place to see whether it holds through the morning.

What did not move

Genoa’s own price has hardly changed, 4.74 to 4.79, and the draw has gone from 3.64 to 3.59, a move of half a percentage point. So where Milan’s lost chance has gone is spread thinly across the other two results rather than piled onto one of them, which is what a general cooling on the favourite looks like, rather than a market that suddenly expects Genoa to win. The goals line has been 2.5 all week, meaning the two prices are for three goals or more and for two or fewer; at 06:22 CET it was over 2.23 and under 1.78, and it opened at 2.08 and 1.81, so the market has become a touch more inclined to a low-scoring game. The handicap, the goal start given to the weaker side to even the contest, has been Genoa plus half a goal for most of the week, switching now and then to a full goal; the feed picks whichever line has prices closest to even money, so that switching is how the feed works, not the market changing its mind. On the half-goal line the price on Genoa to win or draw went from 2.12 on Saturday evening to 1.97 at 06:22 CET.

The public reasons

For the slow drift during the week, the obvious public fact is Thursday. Milan lost 0-2 at home to Ferencváros in the Europa League on 5 November, with both goals from Joseph, in the 52nd and 66th minutes, according to the club’s own report, which also lists a starting side of Torriani in goal, a back four of Terracciano, De Winter, Diawara and Bartesaghi, and Pulisic, Modrić and Camarda among the substitutes used. But the drift began on Sunday 1 November, four days before that game, and continued at much the same pace after it, so the Europa defeat explains at most part of it.

The club also published an official statement on Samuel Chukwueze on Wednesday 4 November, headed as an update on his condition after surgery, so the Nigerian forward is not expected to be available. Milan’s squad list for Genoa and Rúben Amorim’s Saturday press conference were not on the club’s English website when this site read it on Sunday morning, and no page from an allowed source explained the overnight step. “No public reason found” is the honest sentence for that last part of the move.

On Genoa’s side there is a reason the market might not treat this as a routine trip. Genoa beat Juventus in their ninth league game, with the Mexican defender Johan Vásquez as captain, according to ESPN, and Daniele De Rossi is the head coach. They are 12th on 13 points from ten games, with four wins, one draw and five defeats. Milan are fifth on 21 points, with six wins, three draws and one defeat, four points behind Como in fourth and seven behind Lazio at the top, who play at Napoli at 12:30 CET, so Milan kick off knowing what the leaders have done.

What it means

A fall of six and a half percentage points on a favourite is a clear move, but the shape of this one matters as much as the size. Six days of slow drift say the market has been gently cooling on Milan since the derby, through a European defeat and an injury, rather than reacting to a single piece of news. The last step, from 1.89 to 2.00 in one capture, is the only part that looks like a reaction, and the reason for it is not public. At 2.00 Milan are given an even chance of winning, a 50%, and Genoa a 21%. The closing price, the last one captured before kick-off, goes into this site’s record and is what Monday’s “what the market got wrong” piece will measure the result against.
