Real Madrid shorten from 1.33 to 1.23 to win at AEK Athens, with the last step overnight
BettingBeast had Real Madrid at 1.33 to win in Athens at 13:54 CET on Friday, 1.29 after Sunday's 3-0 at Racing, and 1.23 by 02:22 CET on Wednesday. AEK drifted from 9.42 to 14.66. Kick-off 18:45 CET.
Real Madrid’s price to win at AEK Athens on Wednesday evening has shortened steadily since Friday, with the biggest single step arriving overnight. BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, had Madrid at 1.33 at 13:54 CET on Friday. It was 1.29 by Sunday evening, after Madrid had won 3-0 at Racing Santander, 1.28 by late Tuesday morning, 1.25 at 23:23 CET on Tuesday, and 1.23 at 02:22 CET on Wednesday. At 06:23 CET, the capture the card on this page shows, it was still 1.23.
Decimal odds show what you get back for each unit staked, including the stake, so 1.23 means a return of 0.23 on top of each 1 risked. Turned into a rough chance, by dividing 1 by the price, Madrid have gone from about a 75% chance of winning in Athens to about an 81% chance. That is a rise of around six percentage points over five days, which clears the bar this desk uses for a move worth an article (three points or more) with room to spare.
What moved and what did not
Most of the chance that went to Madrid came from AEK. The home side’s price drifted from 9.42 on Friday to 11.07 on Sunday evening, 12.22 on Tuesday morning and 14.66 at 06:23 CET on Wednesday, a fall from about an 11% chance to about a 7% chance. The draw went from 6.71 to 8.30, which is a drop from about 15% to about 12%. In plain words: on Friday the market gave AEK and the draw a quarter of the outcomes between them; now it gives them a fifth.
The goals line, the total the market splits the match at, has been 3.5 at every capture since Friday, apart from a few stray captures at 4.5 on Monday and Tuesday evenings that did not stick. Over 3.5 goals was 1.89 on Friday and 1.82 on Wednesday morning; under 3.5 was 2.00 and is 2.27. That is a shift of about two points towards a high-scoring game, a drift rather than a story.
The handicap, which gives one team a head start in goals so that the two prices sit closer to even money, has mostly been AEK +2 all week, swapping to +1.5 or +2.5 for the odd capture. The feed picks its main line from whichever is nearest to even, so when two neighbouring lines are both close it moves between them; that is how the feed works, not the market changing its mind. At 06:23 CET on Wednesday the line was AEK +2, with AEK at 2.03 and Madrid at 1.93 on it. A line of two goals means the market expects Madrid to win by about two.
The public reason
The first step has a date on it: the price was 1.32 at 15:23 CET on Sunday, an hour before Madrid kicked off at Racing Santander, 1.30 at 17:23 CET, by which time they led 3-0, and 1.29 at 19:23 CET, after a win that kept them three points behind Barcelona in La Liga. Our report of that game is linked below.
The overnight step is harder to pin down. UEFA’s team-news page for the match, published on Tuesday morning, lists Rodrygo (knee) and Raúl Asencio (leg) as out for Madrid, with nobody doubtful, and João Mário (illness) as out for AEK, with Rota (illness) and the goalkeeper Strakosha (wrist) doubtful. UEFA’s predicted line-up for AEK, which is a prediction and not a confirmed team, has Brignoli in goal rather than Strakosha, and Luka Jović, who played for Madrid from 2019 to 2022, alongside Varga in attack. Its predicted Madrid side has Courtois, Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé. None of that is new since Tuesday morning, and the price was 1.28 for most of Tuesday before it moved after 22:00 CET. No public reason for the late step was found in the sources this site uses. The official teams are due at 17:45 CET.
What the price says now
At 06:23 CET on Wednesday the match card reads AEK 14.66, the draw 8.30, Real Madrid 1.23. Madrid are a heavy favourite, the team the market thinks is far more likely to win, and the market has grown more sure of that every day since Friday. A price of 1.23 still leaves roughly one outcome in five for something other than a Madrid win.
The table explains why the game matters to both. Madrid have nine points from three Champions League games, all won, and are fifth of 36, level on points with Barcelona, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Sporting and Betis and behind only PSG. The top eight go straight to the last 16, so a win in Athens keeps them in that group with four games left. AEK have three points from a win and two defeats and are 27th; places nine to 24 go into a play-off round in February, and the bottom 12 are out, so the home side are two places above the line.
Two numbers from UEFA’s own preview for context: the clubs have met four times before, with a win each and two draws, and Jude Bellingham needs one more appearance to reach 60 in the Champions League, which would make him the youngest player to do so. Madrid’s next game is at Valencia on Saturday 7 November at 21:00 CET, the kick-off time taken from the fixture feed used on this site.
Prices move, and this one has moved in the same direction at every step. The chart on this page draws every capture from the feed. That is a reading of what the market has done, not a view on what will happen.
