Bayern Munich won 2-1 at Mainz on Saturday 7 November, in the last Bundesliga game before the international break, kick-off 15:30 CET. Joshua Kimmich scored after 14 minutes and Lennart Karl after 57, both set up by Harry Kane. Phillip Tietz headed in for Mainz in stoppage time. Bayern stay top of the table, level on 21 points with Borussia Dortmund and ahead on goal difference, and are still unbeaten in the league this season.
How it happened
As this site’s preview explained on Saturday morning, Bayern went into the game with head coach Vincent Kompany recovering at home and his assistant Aaron Danks running the team. Mainz, who had lost three league games in a row, made four changes from the side beaten by Elversberg, the Bundesliga’s own match report says. Manuel Neuer started in goal: on his 550th Bundesliga appearance he became the oldest player in Bayern’s history, according to the Bundesliga’s report.
Bayern led after 14 minutes. The Bundesliga’s report says Kane won the ball after a misplaced pass by Jae-Sung Lee and gave it to Kimmich, who hit a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area. Mainz thought they had equalised shortly before half-time, when Lee headed in, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee (VAR, the official who reviews key decisions on a screen) after what ESPN, carrying the Press Association’s report, calls a lengthy check. The half-time score was 1-0.
The second goal came in the 57th minute. Kane’s shot was blocked and, in the Bundesliga’s words, he poked the loose ball to Karl, who scored. It was Karl’s second goal in two competitive games, after his goal at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday. Bayern could have had more: Dayot Upamecano headed against the crossbar, and ESPN says an effort from Alphonso Davies was cleared off the line.
Neuer did not finish the game. ESPN says he took a knock and was forced off; Jonas Urbig replaced him. In the third minute of stoppage time Benedict Hollerbach crossed and Tietz, beating Jonathan Tah to the ball, headed in for Mainz, the Bundesliga’s report says. There was no time for more. Neither report mentions a penalty or a red card, and neither carries a quote from either coach.
What it changes
Bayern have 21 points from nine games: six wins and three draws. Dortmund, who beat Elversberg 2-1 at the same time, also have 21, but Bayern’s goal difference is plus 20 to Dortmund’s plus nine. RB Leipzig are third on 18 after beating Augsburg 5-2. ESPN says the win stretched Bayern’s unbeaten away run in the league to 31 games and was their fourth win in five in all competitions, after the draw with Dortmund and the 2-0 at Atlético.
Mainz stay 11th on ten points from nine games: three wins, one draw and five defeats. The international break follows, so there is no club football next weekend; the data this site uses lists no Bundesliga match after Sunday’s three games.
