Sunderland v Chelsea: the bottom side, seven without a win, host fourth-placed Chelsea with Caicedo a doubt
Sunday 15:00 CET at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland have five points from nine and lost 0-2 to Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday; Chelsea have 16 and beat Manchester United 2-0 a week ago. Sunderland won this game 2-1 in May.
Sunderland, bottom of the Premier League with five points from nine games, host Chelsea, who are fourth on 16, at the Stadium of Light on Sunday 8 November at 15:00 CET. It is the last game before the international break for both, and the two clubs arrive from very different weeks: Sunderland lost 0-2 at home to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League on Thursday, while Chelsea, who missed out on a European place last May according to ESPN, have had the week to prepare since beating Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday 31 October.
Why it matters
Sunderland have one win, two draws and six defeats in the league, and have not won a league game in seven, a run ESPN’s report of the 3-1 defeat at Coventry on 31 October describes as leaving them bottom with “one win from nine matches”. A report carried by ESPN on 2 November said Régis Le Bris, the head coach, kept the club’s confidence despite the run. Coventry’s win took them out of the bottom three and left Sunderland at the foot; the gap to 17th place, where Coventry sit on nine points, is four points. A defeat on Sunday would send Sunderland into the two-week break on five points from ten games.
Chelsea’s season reads the other way. Xabi Alonso’s side have won five, drawn one and lost three, and the win over United, with goals from Morgan Rogers in the 50th minute and Cole Palmer in the 64th, lifted them to fourth, above Liverpool on 15, who have a game in hand and play at Crystal Palace at the same time on Sunday. A win keeps Chelsea in the top four through the break; a defeat and a Liverpool win swap them.
The week around it
Sunderland made six changes for Thursday’s European game, according to ESPN’s report, and lost to goals from Luka Stojković in the 22nd minute and Dion Drena Beljo in the 39th, their first defeat in four Europa League matches. Before that came the 3-1 at Coventry, where Sakamoto, Awoniyi and Rudoni scored before Le Fée pulled one back from a penalty; ESPN’s report of that game says Stephen Mfuni came in for the injured Bobby Thomas. Chelsea’s last game was the United win on 31 October, in which Lisandro Martínez was sent off. Sunday’s other 15:00 CET games are Crystal Palace v Liverpool, Ipswich v Bournemouth and Brighton v Brentford; Manchester United host Aston Villa at 17:30 CET.
Team news
No confirmed team news as of 07:45 CET; the official teams are due at about 13:45 CET. Neither club’s press conference from Friday could be read by this site on Sunday morning, so what follows is from the league’s availability notes, which are estimates, not club statements. For Chelsea, Moisés Caicedo was added on Friday afternoon with a calf injury and a 75% chance of playing; Jordan Henderson is at 75% after illness and Emiliano Martínez at 75% after a head injury. Reece James, João Pedro, Maxence Lacroix, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Jorrel Hato and Aaron Anselmino are listed as out with no return date. For Sunderland, Omar Alderete is suspended until 21 November, Nordi Mukiele is at 75% after a concussion, and Daniel Ballard, Habib Diarra and Romaine Mundle are out.
The recent record
The last meeting was the final day of last season, 24 May 2026, when Sunderland won 2-1 at home, Trai Hume scoring in the 25th minute and a Malo Gusto own goal making it two in the 50th before Palmer pulled one back in the 56th, according to ESPN’s report, which says the defeat cost Chelsea a European place. The reverse fixture from last season was not on a source this site could read.
How to read the market
The market has barely moved. BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, first carried the game at 21:22 CET on Monday 2 November with Sunderland at 3.67, the draw at 3.77 and Chelsea at 2.07. At the 06:22 CET capture on Sunday, the price on the card above, it was Sunderland 3.84, the draw 3.72, Chelsea 2.10. Turning a price into a chance, called the implied probability, means dividing one by the price: Chelsea are given about a 48% chance, Sunderland about a 26%, the draw about a 27%, and none of those has changed by more than one percentage point all week. The handicap, the goal start given to the weaker side to even the contest, is Sunderland plus half a goal, at 1.92 for Sunderland to win or draw and 2.10 for Chelsea to win by any margin; the goals line is 2.5, over at 1.85 and under at 2.12, which is close to even and means the market has no strong view on whether there are three goals.
What to watch
Whether Chelsea’s rest shows. Sunderland have played Thursday and Sunday, with six changes between the two games, and have conceded three at Coventry and two more to Dinamo. The first goal matters more than usual for a home side on a run like this. A lean: a game with goals at both ends looks less likely than a tight one decided by whichever side scores first, and Chelsea’s clean sheets in two of their last three league games, which this site noted after the United game, are the reason. The closing price, the last one captured before kick-off, goes into this site’s record for Monday’s “what the market got wrong” piece.
