Hamburger SV beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 at the Volksparkstadion on Friday 6 November to open the Bundesliga’s ninth round, with Gladbach’s Ko Itakura sent off early in the second half, and Gladbach stay bottom of the table with four points from nine games. Four other games were played on Friday night in the leagues this site covers: Venezia beat Udinese 2-1 in Serie A, Toulouse beat Strasbourg 3-1 in Ligue 1, Sevilla and Alavés drew 0-0 in La Liga, and Everton beat Coventry 3-1 in the Premier League, which has its own report on this site.

Hamburg 3-1 Gladbach

Miro Muheim put Hamburg ahead after 11 minutes with a shot from about 30 metres, set up by Albert Sambi Lokonga, which the Bundesliga’s official match report calls the fastest shot of the season so far, with a scoring chance of 2% by the league’s own match data. Joe Scally levelled for Gladbach a minute before half-time with a shot the league’s live ticker says was helped by a deflection. Four minutes into the second half Itakura, booked after 38 minutes, was shown a second yellow card, the third red card of his Bundesliga career, according to the report; the report says the foul was on Albert Grønbæk, the ticker that it was on David Møller Wolfe near the halfway line, and the two accounts do not agree. Against ten men Shafiq Nandja scored his first Hamburg goal after 60 minutes, from a Grønbæk pass, and Grønbæk scored his own first of the season after 70, his fifth goal involvement of the season after four assists. The referee was Sven Jablonski.

Hamburg’s coach is Merlin Polzin and Gladbach’s is Alexander Blessin, both named on the league’s ticker. Before the game Blessin had said: “We’ve had several good situations after winning the ball recently, but we need to play them out more cleanly.” No post-match quotes from either coach were found on an allowed source by Saturday morning.

The result lifts Hamburg to eighth on 12 points, having played a game more than the sides around them, and leaves Gladbach 18th and last with one win, one draw and seven defeats, 12 goals scored and 25 conceded. The official report notes that Gladbach have been bottom without a break since the fourth round. A win would have lifted them into the relegation play-off place, the ticker said before kick-off; instead the gap to Schalke in 17th is two points, with Schalke still to play at Hoffenheim on Sunday.

Venezia 2-1 Udinese

Venezia beat Udinese 2-1 at home in Serie A, according to the licensed fixture feed used on this site, which carries the scores but not the scorers; no match report from an allowed source was reachable by Saturday morning, so none of the goals are described here. The result matters at the bottom: Venezia go to six points from 11 games and are 19th, and Udinese stay 20th and last on five, in this site’s table. Both have now played a game more than the rest of the division, where Fiorentina, Sassuolo and Parma sit on eight points and Monza on seven.

Toulouse 3-1 Strasbourg

Toulouse beat Strasbourg 3-1 at home in Ligue 1, the feed says. Toulouse move to 13 points from ten games and sit 10th; Strasbourg stay on ten points and are 13th. The scorers are not in the feed and no allowed match report was reachable on Saturday morning.

Sevilla and Alavés drew 0-0 at the Sánchez-Pizjuán in La Liga’s twelfth round. Sevilla go to 18 points from 12 games and are sixth, one point behind Real Sociedad with a game more played; Alavés are ninth on 13. The weekend’s bigger Spanish games follow: Valencia v Real Madrid on Saturday at 21:00 CET and Atlético Madrid v Barcelona on Sunday at 21:00 CET, both previewed on this site.
