Super Eagles squad for Tanzania still unpublished as Tanzania head for Uyo; Osimhen, Lookman and Bassey this weekend
The NFF's website carried no squad as of Friday morning, a week before the AFCON qualifier in Uyo on 13 November. Nigeria are three points behind Guinea-Bissau in Group L. Chukwueze is reported out with a hip injury.
The Nigeria Football Federation had not published the Super Eagles squad for the two AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Tanzania as of 07:43 WAT (07:43 CET) on Friday 6 November, a week before the first game in Uyo. The NFF’s website carried four news items on Friday morning, the latest dated 4 November, none of them about the Tanzania games or the squad. Tanzania named their 24 players on Monday 2 November and are due to arrive in Uyo on Sunday 8 November, according to Complete Sports.
What is known about the squad
Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles coach, submitted his list to the federation in late October, according to a Soccernet report on 5 November, which said the federation was expected to announce it this week. That has not happened. This site has read nothing from the NFF or from Chelle on the Tanzania games, so it cannot say who is in. It can say what has been reported. Soccernet reported on 1 November that Victor Osimhen is expected to return after a groin injury. Complete Sports reported on 4 November that Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milan has been “officially ruled out of both matches due to a lingering hip injury”; that report is the only source for it, and Milan have not said so, though Chukwueze did not appear in Milan’s squad for Thursday’s Europa League defeat by Ferencváros, according to Complete Sports’ match page.
The last official squad, named on 17 September for the games against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, had 24 players, according to Pulse Sports: goalkeepers Arthur Okonkwo, Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali; defenders Bruno Onyemaechi, Isaac James, Benjamin Fredricks, Emmanuel Fernandez, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ola Aina; midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka; forwards Moses Simon, Osimhen, Akor Adams, Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, Tolu Arokodare, George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor. Nigeria beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo and lost 3-0 in Bissau.
The federation itself is in the hands of a normalisation committee appointed by FIFA, after the president and executive committee resigned on 27 August, according to Soccernet, which reported on 29 October that the committee’s job is governance, not team selection.
Why the games matter
Nigeria are second in Group L of AFCON 2027 qualifying with three points from two games, three behind Guinea-Bissau, according to Soccernet’s table on 1 November. Madagascar and Tanzania have one point each. Tanzania are co-hosts of the finals, so they qualify anyway; one qualifying place is at stake between the other three. Nigeria play Tanzania at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday 13 November and in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday 17 November, according to Complete Sports and Soccernet. This site could not reach CAF’s own fixture page on Friday morning to confirm the dates and kick-off times, so it prints no kick-off time. Nigeria have gone five games without a clean sheet, according to Soccernet.
The weekend for the Europe-based players
Victor Osimhen plays for Galatasaray at home to Amed in the Turkish league on Saturday 7 November. He has nine league goals in eight games this season, according to Soccernet, which reported that he scored the opener in the 4-0 win over Konyaspor on 30 October and came off after 61 minutes as a precaution. Galatasaray’s 2-0 win over Stuttgart on Tuesday, with Osimhen playing the full 90 minutes, has its own piece on this site.
Ademola Lookman is at Atlético Madrid, who host Barcelona on Sunday 8 November at 21:00 WAT (21:00 CET) in a game between first and second in La Liga; that match has a preview on this site. Lookman has two goals and one assist in 14 games for Atlético this season and played only 14 minutes against Levante last weekend, according to Soccernet, which quoted Diego Simeone: “I don’t want him to get frustrated because he’s not going through his best moment.”
Calvin Bassey captains Fulham, who host Newcastle on Saturday at 16:00 WAT (16:00 CET). Soccernet reported on 2 November that his contract runs to 2027 with a club option for another year and that Manchester United are among the clubs interested in him, citing TEAMtalk; no bid has been made. Alex Iwobi is in the same Fulham squad. Ola Aina’s Nottingham Forest host Manchester City on Saturday at 18:30 WAT (18:30 CET), a game previewed on this site. Taiwo Awoniyi, who moved from Forest to Coventry in the summer, scored his first Coventry goal in the 3-1 win over Sunderland last Saturday, according to Soccernet; Coventry play at Everton on Friday night at 21:00 WAT (21:00 CET).
Wilfred Ndidi was an unused substitute for Beşiktaş in their 3-2 defeat at Celtic on Thursday, according to Complete Sports’ match page, which lists him on the bench with no substitution; this site has not confirmed that with a second source. Tochukwu Nnadi came on for Marseille in their 1-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen, according to the same site’s match page. Thursday’s Europa League results have a round-up on this site.
The Flamingos
Away from the senior team, Nigeria’s under-17 women, the Flamingos, beat Brazil 3-1 in Rabat on Wednesday to reach the final of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time, the NFF reported on its website, with goals from Queen Joseph and two from Awawu Bashiru. They play Japan in the final; the NFF’s report did not state the date.
