The biggest game in Spain this month is on Sunday night. Barcelona, top of La Liga on 30 points from eleven games, go to Atlético Madrid, who are second on 28, at the Metropolitano at 21:00 CET on Sunday 8 November. Real Madrid, third on 27, play at Valencia on Saturday evening, so by the time this game kicks off the leaders will know exactly what a win or a defeat does to the table.

Why it matters

Barcelona have won ten of eleven league games and lost one. Atlético have won nine, drawn one and lost one. The two sides have the two best records in the division, and a Barcelona win would put them five points clear of Atlético with twelve games played; an Atlético win would put them top on 31. Both arrive from the Champions League in different moods. Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0 at the Camp Nou on Tuesday, with Lamine Yamal scoring in the 7th minute and Raphinha twice in the second half. Atlético lost 0-2 at home to Bayern the same night, to second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer; that game has its own report on this site, linked below. Barcelona’s top scorers in the league this season are Raphinha with 11, Yamal with 10 and Fermín López with 7, according to ESPN’s team page.

The week around it

Atlético have no other game before Sunday. Barcelona do not either. The game is the last of La Liga’s twelfth round, and the last match before the international break; many players on both sides join their national squads from Monday. Elsewhere in the round, Valencia host Real Madrid at 21:00 CET on Saturday, Sevilla play Alavés on Friday night and Real Betis, fourth on 23 points, go to Elche on Sunday lunchtime.

Team news

Barcelona will be without Rodri. The midfielder, signed from Manchester City in the summer, came off at half-time against Villa, and ESPN reported on Wednesday that tests at the club confirmed a minor injury to his right hamstring, with no return date given. Hansi Flick had said on Tuesday night, in words carried by the club’s website: “He felt some discomfort, and we will have to wait until tomorrow to assess it.” The same ESPN report says Eric García and Andreas Christensen trained on Wednesday and are close to a return, that Jules Koundé is not yet in full training with an ankle problem, and that Xavi Espart, Dani Olmo and Roony Bardghji remain out. The club’s squad list for the Villa game named six injured players; Gabriel Jesus, Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri were all in it.

For Atlético there is no confirmed team news as of 07:30 CET on Thursday; Diego Simeone’s press conference comes later in the week. What is known is who played on Tuesday. Against Bayern, Simeone started Oblak; Grimaldo, Le Normand, Hancko and Pubill; Barrios, Llorente, Baena and Giuliano Simeone; Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth, according to ESPN’s match page. Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian forward signed from Atalanta in the summer, came on in the 59th minute, his second appearance from the bench in a row after Friday’s win at Levante. Jonathan David, the Canadian striker on loan from Juventus, came on in the 75th. Obed Vargas, the Mexican midfielder, was an unused substitute, and has not played a minute in La Liga this season; Simeone told reporters before the Bayern game, as quoted by Récord, “Es un chico que está trabajando muy bien”, that he is a lad who is working very well.

The recent record

Last season the two clubs met six times. In the league Barcelona won both, 3-1 at the Camp Nou in December 2025 and 2-1 at the Metropolitano in April, according to ESPN’s match page. Atlético won the two cup ties: they went through the Copa del Rey semi-final 4-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg 4-0 and losing the second 3-0, and through the Champions League quarter-final 3-2 on aggregate after a 2-0 win and a 2-1 defeat. So Barcelona have won four of the six games and Atlético have won the two that mattered most.

How to read the market

The price has barely moved. BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, had Barcelona at 1.85 to win when it first carried the game at 21:23 CET on Sunday 1 November; it drifted to 1.92 by Tuesday morning and was back at 1.85 at 07:22 CET on Thursday, the capture on the card above, with Atlético at 3.87 and the draw at 4.55. At 1.85 Barcelona are given about a 54% chance by the price, and Atlético about 26%; a swing of under two percentage points across the week is noise rather than news. The goals line is 3.5, with over at 1.85 and under at 2.16 at the same capture, which says the market expects goals.

What to watch

The first 20 minutes. Barcelona scored inside seven minutes against Villa and have scored 34 more goals than they have conceded in the league; Atlético have kept their record on a defence that has conceded 14 fewer than it has scored. Who holds the ball in midfield without Rodri is the other question, against the Barrios and Baena pairing that started for Atlético on Tuesday. A lean: a tight first half and a game decided by one goal looks more likely than another Barcelona rout, given how Atlético have defended at home this season. The official teams are due at about 20:00 CET on Sunday; the card on this page carries the latest price.
