Santiago Giménez came off the bench and set up a goal as Porto beat Napoli 4-1 at the Estádio do Dragão on Wednesday 4 November, Porto’s first win in this season’s Champions League. The Mexican striker, on loan at Porto from AC Milan, replaced Borja Sainz in the 67th minute, with the score 1-1, and 23 minutes later Porto had scored three more. Kick-off was at 14:00 in Mexico City (21:00 CET).

What Giménez did

Claro Sports’ minute-by-minute account has Giménez’s first involvement in the 70th minute, a shot saved by the Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret. A minute later he played the pass that made the second goal: Fox Sports México describes it as a pass into the middle of the box, where Giménez saw Gabri Veiga’s run from the left, and Veiga’s finish went between Meret’s legs, as UEFA’s round-up puts it. In the 88th minute Giménez was involved again, according to Claro Sports, in the move that ended with Napoli’s Rafa Marín fouling Samu in the box; Rafa Marín was sent off and Samu scored the penalty in the 90th minute. Giménez did not score. Fox Sports México notes that he has now played in three of Porto’s four Champions League games this season, none of them from the start.

How the game went

Jan Bednarek headed Porto in front in the 11th minute from a Gabri Veiga corner, according to UEFA; Scott McTominay equalised for Napoli in the 43rd minute, according to Claro Sports, so it was 1-1 at half-time. Gabri Veiga’s goal in the 71st minute put Porto back in front, Jakub Kiwior headed a third from a corner in the 80th minute and Samu’s penalty made it four. Napoli, who had Kevin De Bruyne and Rasmus Højlund in their starting eleven according to Claro Sports, have now lost three of their four games in the league phase and sit 27th of 36 clubs on three points. Porto, who had lost their first three, are 26th on the same points with a better goal difference. The top eight go straight to the last 16; places nine to 24 go to a play-off round in February. Porto’s next Champions League game is at Feyenoord on 24 November.

The El Tri squad is due

Rafael Márquez’s second squad as Mexico coach, for the Concacaf Nations League quarter-final against Jamaica, is expected on Thursday 5 November, according to Claro Sports, which gave no time for the announcement. The first leg is in Kingston on Saturday 14 November at 19:00 Mexico City time (02:00 CET on Sunday 15 November) and the second at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey on Tuesday 17 November at 20:30 (03:30 CET on Wednesday 18 November), according to the same report. These are Márquez’s first competitive matches since he took the job in July.

Claro Sports reported on Wednesday that Alexis Vega, Jesús Gallardo and Jesús Orozco Chiquete would be in the list, and that Giménez, Obed Vargas of Atlético Madrid, Álvaro Fidalgo of Real Betis, Johan Vásquez of Genoa and Armando González of Olympiacos were expected to be called. Nothing is official until the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol publishes the list. Our piece on Tuesday on the six Mexicans in Europe this week, and our preview of Wednesday’s game, are linked below. Vargas was an unused substitute in Atlético’s 0-2 defeat to Bayern on Tuesday and has not played a league minute this season; Atlético host Barcelona on Sunday 8 November at 14:00 Mexico City time (21:00 CET), a game previewed on this site today.
