Crystal Palace v Liverpool: Palace 18th and without Mateta, Liverpool after two defeats with Gravenberch day to day
Sunday 15:00 CET at Selhurst Park. Palace have lost three league games in a row without scoring; Liverpool are fifth, nine behind Arsenal, after losing to Arsenal and at Fenerbahçe. Mateta is banned.
Liverpool go to Crystal Palace on Sunday 8 November at 15:00 CET, one of four Premier League games at that time, with both sides needing a result for different reasons. Liverpool are fifth on 15 points from nine games, nine behind Arsenal, and have lost their last two matches: 0-1 at home to Arsenal in the league on 1 November and 2-3 at Fenerbahçe in the Champions League on Wednesday. Palace are 18th, in the relegation zone, on seven points, and have lost three league games in a row without scoring a goal.
Why it matters
For Liverpool, it is the game that decides what the mood is over the international break. Andoni Iraola’s side had beaten Brentford and Brighton in the league and Villarreal 4-3 in Europe in October, according to ESPN’s results, and had a perfect Champions League record until Wednesday. In Istanbul they conceded, as ESPN put it, from a free kick, a corner and a long throw. Iraola’s verdict afterwards, as quoted by ESPN: “Cheap goals. Messy goals.” On the club’s website he said: “The main reason I can find to lose the game is we conceded three set-pieces.” Arsenal, nine points clear of Liverpool, play Hull at home on Saturday afternoon.
For Palace, it is about stopping a slide. Their last three league results are 0-5 at Brighton on 18 October, 0-2 at home to Newcastle on 25 October and 0-2 at Tottenham on 31 October, according to ESPN’s team page. Pierre Sage, their head coach, said after the Tottenham game, as quoted by ESPN: “I will never give up.” On Thursday night Palace drew 1-1 at home with Hoffenheim in the Europa League with ten men, Daichi Kamada equalising in the first minute of added time after Adam Wharton had been sent off for a second yellow card; Sky Sports’ headline said the goal eased the pressure on Sage. Thursday’s Europa League games have a round-up on this site.
The week around it
This is the last round before the international break. The round opens with Everton v Coventry on Friday at 21:00 CET. Saturday has Leeds v Tottenham at 13:30 CET, Arsenal v Hull and Fulham v Newcastle at 16:00 CET and Nottingham Forest v Manchester City at 18:30 CET. On Sunday, Palace v Liverpool, Sunderland v Chelsea, Brighton v Brentford and Ipswich v Bournemouth all kick off at 15:00 CET, and Manchester United host Aston Villa at 17:30 CET. After the break, Liverpool host Manchester United on 22 November and Palace go to Coventry on 21 November.
Team news
Palace are without Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is serving a three-match ban. He was sent off after 13 minutes at Tottenham for a challenge on Micky van de Ven, a yellow card upgraded to red after a VAR review, and the club’s appeal was dismissed on Wednesday by an independent regulatory commission, according to ESPN; the ban covers Liverpool, Coventry and Hull. Wharton’s red card on Thursday was in the Europa League, and neither Sky Sports nor ESPN says anything about him missing Sunday, so this piece does not either. Ismaïla Sarr has a groin injury; Sage said on 29 October, as quoted by ESPN, that he expected him back “after the international break”. Axel Disasi was left out of Thursday’s squad, and Sage declined to say why: “It’s an internal decision. I don’t want to comment,” as quoted by Sky Sports. Sage’s press conference before this game had not been published on an allowed source by Friday morning.
Liverpool’s one named doubt is Ryan Gravenberch, who has a fractured heel. Iraola said this week, in the club’s own account: “It’s a fracture of the heel. It’s about the pain.” On Sunday: “I don’t know, it’s a day-to-day thing.” Gravenberch was an unused substitute against Arsenal and did not play in Istanbul. Dominik Szoboszlai and Daniel Muñoz have returned from injury and started on Wednesday. Iraola’s press conference is at 14:30 CET on Friday, after this piece was written. No confirmed team news as of 07:30 CET on Friday; the official teams are due at about 14:00 CET on Sunday.
The referee is Tony Harrington, with Michael Salisbury on VAR, according to Liverpool’s website.
The recent record
Liverpool beat Palace 3-1 at Anfield in April, Alexander Isak and Andy Robertson scoring in the first half and Florian Wirtz in stoppage time, with Muñoz replying for Palace, according to Liverpool’s own coverage of the game. Wirtz said afterwards that it was the fourth meeting between the sides that season. This site could not find the results of the other three on an allowed source by Friday morning, so it does not list them.
How to read the market
BettingBeast’s feed, which this site reads at least once an hour, had not priced this game at 07:22 CET on Friday, the latest capture when this piece was written, so the card on this page has no price yet. The feed carried four of the weekend’s Premier League games at that capture: Leeds v Tottenham, Arsenal v Hull, Fulham v Newcastle and Forest v Manchester City. When the feed adds Palace v Liverpool, the card picks it up with its capture time. This piece quotes no price from anywhere else.
What to watch
Whether Palace can score. Three league games without a goal, and their main striker banned, is the plain problem; Kamada’s goal on Thursday was their first in any game since 28 October. Whether Liverpool stop conceding from set pieces, the thing Iraola named twice after Istanbul. And whether Gravenberch is fit: Iraola said on the club’s website that if he can be available “he would be a very good help for us”. A lean: a Liverpool win by a single goal, in a game with few goals, looks the most likely shape, given Palace’s recent record in front of goal and Liverpool’s recent record at the back. The card on this page carries the price once the feed has one.
