Borussia Dortmund beat Elversberg 2-1 on Saturday with two goals from Felix Nmecha and stay level with Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga after nine games, both on 21 points. RB Leipzig scored five against Augsburg, Stuttgart ended Werder Bremen’s unbeaten run, and Eintracht Frankfurt, down to ten men, drew 2-2 at Paderborn with a back-heel in stoppage time. In Italy, Roma beat Sassuolo 3-0 to go second, one point behind Lazio, who play at Napoli on Sunday lunchtime. In France, Paris Saint-Germain beat Troyes 1-0.
Dortmund 2-1 Elversberg
It was 0-0 at half-time at Signal Iduna Park. According to the Bundesliga’s official match report, Nmecha scored in the 55th minute from a Fabio Silva assist and again in the 71st, and Noel Futkeu pulled one back for Elversberg in the 81st minute with what the league’s companion piece calls “a late bicycle kick”, set up by Florian Le Joncour. Carney Chukwuemeka went off in the 34th minute, with Maximilian Beier replacing him; Serhou Guirassy was already out with a thigh injury picked up in the Champions League win over Real Betis, according to the league’s pre-match page. Elversberg’s goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof saved from Nmecha, Jobe Bellingham and Konstantinos Karetsas before the goals came. About 8,000 Elversberg supporters travelled, a club record for an away game.
The result extends Dortmund’s unbeaten start to the league season to nine games, six wins and three draws. Bayern, who beat Mainz 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, also have 21 points and are ahead on goal difference, plus 20 to plus nine. Niko Kovač, Dortmund’s head coach, had said before the game, in words carried by the league’s website: “We want to end this cycle with a win.” Elversberg, seventh on 13 points, have lost four league games this season.
Leipzig 5-2 Augsburg
Augsburg scored after a minute at the Red Bull Arena, through Anton Kade, after a poor header by Willi Orbán let Arijon Ibrahimović shoot and Maarten Vandevoordt could only parry. Then Leipzig scored five. The league’s report gives the goals as Ezechiel Banzuzi in the 34th minute and Christopher Nkunku in the 35th, both set up by Brajan Gruda; David Raum with a free kick in off the post in first-half stoppage time; Rômulo in the 60th minute from a Nkunku pass; and Christoph Baumgartner in the 66th, within a minute of coming on, from Antonio Nusa. Uchenna Ogundu scored Augsburg’s second in stoppage time. Leipzig, coached by Martín Demichelis, had won all four previous home league games without conceding a goal; Augsburg, under Manuel Baum, were without a win in six before this and are 13th on nine points. Leipzig are third on 18.
Stuttgart 1-0 Bremen, Paderborn 2-2 Frankfurt
Maximilian Mittelstädt scored the only goal of Stuttgart’s game in the seventh minute, from a Grischa Prömel pass, and later hit the post. The report says Alexander Nübel denied Youri Regeer one on one after the restart, and that the result ends Bremen’s run of seven league games unbeaten and gives Stuttgart their first back-to-back league wins of the season. Stuttgart are eighth on 12 points, Bremen fifth on 15.
At Paderborn, Jonathan Burkardt put Frankfurt ahead in the 23rd minute from a Farès Chaïbi assist, Raphael Obermair equalised on the stroke of half-time, and Marvin Pieringer put Paderborn ahead from a penalty in the 73rd minute after a foul by Lilian Brassier, beating a goalkeeper, Noah Atubolu, who the league says had saved his previous six Bundesliga penalties. Elias Baum was sent off for Frankfurt two minutes later for a second yellow card. Frankfurt still took a point: in the third minute of stoppage time Atubolu went up for a corner and the ball reached Burkardt, who scored with a back-heel, the league crediting the goalkeeper with the assist. Frankfurt are ninth on 12 points, Paderborn 12th on ten.
